Levanzo island:for a holiday in the peace of mind with “all the beauty” of the Mediterranean

If you are looking forward to a relaxing vacation in a beautiful spot in Sicily, then Levanzo island can be a good choice as it offers a slow paced life with a quiet atmosphere.

Levanzo is an island of unspoiled nature, thanks to the old fashioned way of life of the island: only one road bisects the island from south to north, making it a veritable haven of peace and serenity, beloved by nature-lovers and those who seek solitude and rhythms set by the breaking waves or by the sound of ones own feet on the stones.

The best way to enjoy exploring this region is by walking on foot as it is a small island, which is around 5.82 kms wide and can be accessed from the North West and South East side very easily.

Once you arrive in Levanzo island, you will see its white houses arranged around the port, it looks like a nativity scene. From the village of Levanzo, a short paved road leads to Spiaggia del Faraglione, one of the most beautiful on the island.

But not the only one. On the southeast coast there are two other small and beautiful beaches:

Cala Fredda and Cala Minnola.
This place is also a haven for divers who want to have an enriching diving experience in the clear blue green waters of the island. The scenic beauty of the island with small coves and bays attracts most of the visitors to this small and peaceful island.

The colour of the water has an extraordinary clarity thanks to the pure rock seabed. Numerous schools of fish that swim to its lowest depths, help give Levanzo wondrous scenery.

Are you a passionate diver? Levanzo offers a very interesting archaeological underwater route. Between Cala Minnola and Punta Altarella, about 27 meters deep, there are the remains of a Roman shipwreck, with amphorae and pottery shards of black glazed pottery dating back to the first century BC.

Don’t miss: The Cave of Genoese is one of the most popular attractions of Levanzo and is regarded as a historical and cultural treasure of this island.

Found in the year 1949, this cave is located in a gorge and has a width of around 8 meters. As you explore this cave, you can come across a lot of paintings belonging to the ancient times along with graffiti written on the walls.

There are many illustrations that depict the prehistoric man through some of the lovely wall paintings.

Most of these paintings belong to the Neolithic and Paleolithic times, whereas the ones found at the bottom belong to the Upper Paleolithic era.

You can come across figures representing animals such as horses, cattle along with fishes, dolphins and tuna made using charcoal or animal fat.
