Sardinia: Cagliari and the Pink Flamingos

Don’t miss this excursion in Sardinia, Cagliari. A visit to the Park of Molentargius with its pink flamingos is one of the island unforgettable excursions. A few kilometres far from Cagliari city centre, the landscape suddenly switches to pink, offering the view of the Regional Natural Park of Molentargius-Saline.

Here, the pink flamingo is the protagonist of a real natural miracle that takes place every year in these lagoons.

In fact, at the salt pans and the pond of Molentargius, one can see large colonies of flamingos lay eggs and then raise pulli (as they call the little flamingo), as soon as they hatch.

This is a show that you can easily see or from the Monte Urpino panoramic viewpoint, or from the telescope placed on the terrace of Palazzo Square in Castello, or, thanks to the tourist guides of the “Parco Regionale Molentargius – Saline” (born to protect the flamingos and all species of the most important wewetlands of Mediterranean), directly from the pond.

The most exciting time to see pink flamingos in Sardinia is during the first weeks of June, when these birds decide to stop, nest and lay their eggs, forming that way, an extended pink cloud.

The best moment of the day to spot flamingos is just before sunset, when everything turns pink, from the mountains to the salt pans. The silhouettes of flamingos in flight, forming a “v” shape, stand out in the sky, creating an exciting spectacle every day.

Sardinia- Cagliari Tips:

  • One of the best ways to discover Molentargius Regional Natural Park is by bicycle: if you don’t have one, among the Sali Scelti Palace you can find a bike rental and a bike sharing service.
  • The experts recommend to put on suitable clothing for the hiking, to avoid bright colours and to choose comfortable and water resistant shoes and mimetic clothing: this will make it easier to escape to the sharp eyes of the animals, so that you can watch them during their activities.
  • We recommend you to bring your binoculars – you can also rent them at the park’s Infopoint only for one euro, this will make it easier to observe the animals without getting too close to them, thus avoiding disturbing them.
  • Do not forget to bring your camera to capture the wonders that the Regional Park offers!
