This is where it all started…In 1508, Raphael and Michelangelo were Italy’s most brilliant young artists and they had both come from Florence to Rome to work for the Pope, Julius II. The Pope had ambitious plans to redecorate both the Sistine Chapel and his private apartments and he chose Michelangelo to fresco the chapel ceiling and Raphael to do the apartments. Michelangelo was a rebel and a loner, while Raphael was always accompanied by an enthusiastic crowd of followers and admirers. They tried to avoid each other, but it was not easy: the Vatican was the co-working open-plan space of both of them. Curious for more?
