Deruta and the Palio Virtual Walking Tour: Ceramics, History, and Celebration

Join us for a vibrant virtual walking tour through Deruta, the Umbrian hill town world-renowned for its hand-painted ceramics and timeless charm. As we explore its medieval streets, artisan workshops, and colorful piazzas, you’ll discover the rich cultural heritage that has shaped this town for centuries.

But this isn’t just a tour of beautiful buildings and pottery—it’s also time for the Palio della Brocca, one of Deruta’s most cherished traditions. This lively summer festival blends faith, folklore, and friendly competition among the town’s historic districts. Locals dress in Renaissance costume and parade through the streets in a joyful reenactment that celebrates the town’s devotion to the Madonna and its connection to water, work, and craft.

The highlight of the celebration is the thrilling Palio, where Deruta’s neighborhoods compete in games inspired by medieval trades, including a unique race balancing water-filled ceramic jugs (brocche)—a true test of speed, balance, and teamwork!

This tour is perfect for anyone curious about Italy’s small-town spirit, rich heritage, and vibrant living traditions.
