Skyway Monte Bianco: Courmayeur

Have you ever imagined to reach one of the European’s top peak riding a futuristic cableway? Now this dream can be realized with the Skyway Monte Bianco.
Skyway Monte Bianco is a cable car in the Alps, linking the Italian town of Courmayeur with Pointe Helbronner on the southern side of the Mont Blanc massif.

Taking over three years to construct, it opened in 2015 at a cost of 110 million euros, and is considered to be the world’s most expensive cable car installation.

Immersed in a breathtaking landscape, Skyway Monte Bianco covers three futuristic stations which offer restaurants, bars, cultural and entertaining services.

Skyway Monte Bianco offers panoramic semi-spherical cabins which gently rotate a full 360 degrees for the duration of the ascent and allow to grasp the splendour of Mont Blanc and the surrounding peaks, such as the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and the Gran Paradiso.

The departure point of the cable car is Pontal – Courmayeur (1,300 m), where the ticket office, parking facilities and a small coffee shop are located.

The second stop is at Pavillon du Mont Fréty (2,200 m), which hosts the winery Cave Mont Blanc, a conference room for up to 150 people and a special shopping area. At the second station you will discover one of Europe’s highest botanic gardens can be found.

The “Botanic Garden Saussurea” hosts more than 900 plant species, including some of the rarest and most beautiful plants from the worldwide mountain areas.

Excellent news for families: there is a new playground at Pavillon. “Skyway for Kids” allows children to discover the natural environment of the Mont Fréty and the surrounding landscape by interacting, playing and learning.

Our tip: Have lunch at the restaurant “Buffet Alpino”. Eating in Aosta Valley is a unique experience, doing it at those altitudes can be even more wonderful. Don’t miss to try awesome food like the Italian fonduta, the polenta concia and different varieties of grappa.

The final stop is Punta Helbronner where the cable car ascends to the spectacular altitude of 3,466 m.

The main attraction is here: a circular scenic terrace 14 meters in diameter with a unique all around view over most of the highest peaks of the Western Alps: Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn, the Gran Paradiso and the Grand Combin.

There is also a room called “Mont Blanc room” that gives the impression that one could reach out and touch the mighty mountain and all the majestic beauty.
Lastly, The “Hans Marguerettaz” hall hosts the permanent exhibition of crystals of Mont Blanc where you can admire the jewels of our mountains.

Please note: Cableway departures are scheduled every 20 minutes from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. The schedules are subject to change depending on technical and atmospheric requirements. The facility will be closed from 13 to 17 May and from 4 to 29 November.
Tickets can be purchased at the ticket station in Pontal (Courmayeur) or online (Round trip from € 52)

As long distance walking is not required, this experience can be enjoyed by everyone, unless there are health problems caused by high altitude.
