Trans-Siberian Train: in the Heart of Abruzzo National Park

Experience a journey on a historic train along ancient tracks that run through the Abruzzo and Molise Apennines, between narrow gorges, and majestic mountains in the heart of Abruzzo National Park and Nature Reserves.

A spectacular route which alone is worth a slow journey to discover the small villages and large cities where history and traditions are kept by local communities…

A journey that combines the Majella massif with its large peaks and karst plateaus with his grandiose monuments, works of art and man’s work of these wonderful lands.

The service, on a 1930s-era train, is considered one of the oldest and most beautiful train route in Italy, it is also one of the highest, taking you to Rivisondoli-Pescocostanzo at 1,269m above sea level.

The line runs one Sunday a month through the spectacular scenery between Sulmona and Isernia. Inaugurated in 1897, it was part of the project that crossed the Apennines mountains connecting Naples to Pescara.

Step on board and you’ll be warped back into the past. The wooden panels, the black and white photos hanging above the benched seats, classic curtains framing the side of the windows all create an atmosphere that allows you to relive a ride on the historic Transiberian in Italy, through the Abruzzo National Park!

Reaching an altitude of 1,269 meters, the train will pass through myriad tunnels and narrow cuttings, lakes and forests that will mesmerize you.

Slowly conquering the summits of Abruzzo, looping down gently after every peak, the Italian Trans Siberian will show you that there is no rush to get to a destination, because the charm of any travel is going through the journey itself, at a slow pace, like an old-style locomotive puffing its way through the majestic beauty of the Appenini.
