The Life of Saint Francis of Assisi Virtual Tour
Join us on a journey into the world of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of Italy, one of the most captivating figures of the Middle Ages. More than a religious symbol, his life reflects the cultural, social, and political changes that shaped 13th-century Italy.
We’ll begin with his early years in Assisi, where Francis grew up as the son of a wealthy merchant, surrounded by privilege and opportunity. His experience as a soldier and prisoner of war, however, marked a dramatic turning point. Choosing to abandon comfort and status, he embraced a radically different path that would eventually inspire a movement, leaving a profound mark on both spirituality and society.
As we follow his story, we will explore the places most closely tied to his life and legacy. From the medieval streets of Assisi to the great Basilica of Saint Francis, adorned with frescoes by Giotto and Cimabue, and the peaceful hermitages scattered through Umbria, these landmarks reveal not only his memory but also the cultural richness of the Middle Ages.
Don’t miss the second episode, as we explore Assisi itself and walk through the places that shaped the life of Saint Francis.
