Città della Pieve Virtual Walking Tour – the Birthplace of Perugino
Join us for a fascinating virtual walking tour through Città della Pieve, one of Umbria’s most charming hill towns, surrounded by beautiful countryside overlooking the Val di Chiana and the distant hills of Tuscany.
Built almost entirely from warm red bricks, Città della Pieve is a maze of narrow streets, hidden corners, elegant Renaissance buildings and panoramic viewpoints. Its position near the historic border between Umbria and Tuscany has shaped its unique character, creating a fascinating blend of artistic traditions, architecture and local culture.
During our walk, we will explore the atmospheric historic center and discover some of its most important landmarks, including the Cathedral of Saints Gervasius and Protasius. We will also visit the famous Vicolo Baciadonne, one of the narrowest streets in Italy. According to local tradition, its romantic name—“the alley of kissing women”—comes from the fact that two people passing through its narrowest section would have to come extremely close to one another.
Città della Pieve is also celebrated as the birthplace of Pietro Vannucci, better known as Perugino, one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance and the teacher of Raphael. As we explore the town, we will learn about his life, his unmistakable style and the artistic heritage he left in his hometown.
Along the way, we will discover stories of medieval rivalries, powerful families, religious traditions and everyday life in this beautiful Umbrian town. Come with us and discover Città della Pieve, a hidden Umbrian gem where Renaissance art, medieval charm and breathtaking scenery come together in an unforgettable way.
